Grand Prize Essay

Essay Question: If you had to introduce yourself to a classroom of total strangers, how would you describe yourself? In other words, what makes you “you”?

“Who are you?” was the question my teacher asked as I stood in front of 19 unfamiliar faces. The first thing that comes to mind may be your name, age, or favorite thing. But does that really define who you are?

If that was the answer my new teacher wanted, she would have asked those specific questions. She wanted to know what was especially unique about the child standing next to her. I had to give her an answer.

Finally, I came up with 3 simple words “I am music.” I continued, “I play many instruments, dance, sing, act, and draw. I don’t go a day in my life without music and wouldn’t dare try…”

“When people ask me what my favorite instrument is, I reply, anything that makes noise. When they ask what my favorite dance is, I say, all the ones that move. When they ask about my favorite song, I say, all of the ones with words. I am song. I am dance. I am art. I am music. I am me.
